    Default Scottish roots??

We are very lucky in Scotland to have a fairly good system of records for those wishing to trace their family histories. Compulsory registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages was introduced in 1855.
Our partner site is ancestry.co.uk click on the ads on our site to go there and help find your roots, or post here to ask any questions on your family name or to make contact with other members of you "clan"

The National Registry which is located at the East end of Princes Street, Edinburgh also holds church records dating back to the early 1500's. They charge a fee of appx £14 which allows you access to all the records for the whole day.

They use a computerised system which has the details of every name from the last 500 years(where possible) and is easy to use. I spent the day in there and traced my family tree back to 1725.

I would recommend this to everyone - I spent a few days there in the 70's when a search consisted of requesting registers and cyclically searching marriage records - it lists parents of both parties - then searching for birth records of the parents etc - a long manual process - there was a limited microfiche service available which was funded by the Mormons I believe - however in less than a week I was able to trace records back to the mid 1500's.

With computer searches this could be possible in a day.

You can also search the Census records from way back - which show details of households - occupants/occupations etc - fascinating reading of family life in the past

So any rainy day you are at a loss for something to do get searching - the best 14 quid you'll ever spend.

Its something I always plan to do, but put it off as I always thought my brother was tracing one side of the family (our dad's) and my cousin the other (his mum's and hence my mum's too!) but I've yet to see any results!

don't know if Bruce is your first/last name - if its your surname it could take a while to trace your roots through the generations - an uncommon last name cuts down the number of results/dead-ends( )

Bruce is my first name - and being born in Dunfermline I kinda figure I was named after the man himself (and it helps that I also share his birthday). My surname isn't too common, but also has French origins tho is listed as a sept of the MacDonnell of Keppoch clan. My dad's family came from the Kinross area and have been in this country a few years now... so I'm hoping to have Scottish blood going back a few generations!

through the parish registers I traced my ancestors to Muirtown of Ardblair - I once tried to find it but ended up driving in circles - cant be a very big town!

Muirtown of Ardblair is (was?) in the Blairgowrie area... probably been swallowed up by another area or even renamed!

    Welcome to visitedscotland.com gryphon.

How are you getting on with your tracing. Have you found anything interesting so far going back through your family history?

Had a quick look at the site you linked but got bombarded with pop ups! Forgot I had the blocker turned off!
